FAQ

Questions people ask.

Short answers. The security and architecture pages have the long ones.

01Privacy
Can you see my files?
No. Files, file names and folder names are encrypted on your device before they are uploaded, with keys that never reach us. We see encrypted data, its size and when it changed.
Can you open a vault if the police ask?
No. We do not have the keys. We can only hand over what we hold: your email address, your plan and payment records, your sign-ins, and encrypted data we cannot read.
Do you use trackers or show ads?
No. The apps contain no third-party analytics or advertising code, and this website loads nothing from other sites. You pay for storage, and that pays for the service.
Where are my files stored?
With Hetzner, in Helsinki, Finland. The privacy policy lists every company involved.
02Passwords
What if I forget a vault's password?
Open the vault with its recovery key, the 12 words you wrote down when you made it, and set a new password. Without the password and the recovery key, nobody can open the vault.
Is there a password reset by email?
No. An email reset would let anyone who gets into your email open your files. A forgotten account password needs the email code and your recovery key.
Why no fingerprint or face unlock?
Someone can hold your finger to the phone, or the phone to your face, without your help. A password only works if you type it.
Why does unlocking take a few seconds?
Each password try uses 1 GiB of memory on purpose. It makes guessing slow for anyone who copies your data. A vault you opened on the same phone or browser in the last 7 days opens in about a second. On your phone, the home vault opens with a tap.
03Using it
Does it work offline?
On Android, a vault with a phone copy works with no connection, and syncs when it can. A vault with Phone copy off, and the web app, need the internet.
Can I use it on an iPhone?
Yes, through the web app in Safari. There is no iPhone app yet.
When will the Android app be on Google Play?
Soon. Until then the web app works in the phone's browser with the same account and vaults.
Can I use a vault on my phone and my computer at the same time?
Yes. Both can have it open, and each one shows the other's changes as they happen. A note typed on one shows on the other a moment later.
Can I bring my notes from another app?
If the app exports plain text or Markdown files, yes. Put the files in a folder named Notes at the top of the vault, and they show in the Notes mode.
Can I share a vault with someone?
Not for two people to use at once. You can share single files with a link, and send files with Stonedrop. The person who gets the link needs no account. You can also give a whole vault to another account with Move to another account; it then leaves yours.
How big can a shared file be?
Up to 2 GB for a share link or a Stonedrop.
04Account
How do I get my files out if I leave?
Choose Export, then Export files, in each vault's menu. You get normal ZIP files with your folders, decrypted on your device, and any computer opens them. It works on every plan. The guide has the steps.
How do I delete my account?
Export the files you want to keep first. Then write to [email protected] from your account's email address. We delete your data as the privacy policy says.
Is Stonesafe open source?
